2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives wish to honor the tenure of our esteemed | ||||||
4 | colleague, Representative and Assistant Majority Leader Delia | ||||||
5 | Ramirez, and thank her for her dedicated service to our State | ||||||
6 | and to the people of Chicago; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Born in the Belmont Cragin community in Chicago, | ||||||
8 | Leader Ramirez is the daughter of working-class Guatemalan | ||||||
9 | immigrants; her mother crossed the border while pregnant to | ||||||
10 | give her children new opportunities in the United States, and | ||||||
11 | her family moved soon after to Humboldt Park; her parents | ||||||
12 | worked multiple jobs to make ends meet and care for their | ||||||
13 | children; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Leader Ramirez's experiences in her younger years | ||||||
15 | propelled her to a life of serving others; she earned her | ||||||
16 | Bachelor of Arts in Justice Studies from Northeastern Illinois | ||||||
17 | University; she has spent most of her professional life | ||||||
18 | serving as a community organizer and social services director; | ||||||
19 | she was the founding executive director of the Center for | ||||||
20 | Changing Lives; she also worked in the nonprofit space for | ||||||
21 | Common Cause and Community Renewal Society and was the board | ||||||
22 | chair for the Latin United Community Housing Association | ||||||
23 | (LUCHA) and the Logan Square Neighborhood Association (LSNA); |

1 | throughout her career, she has been dedicated to fighting for | ||||||
2 | affordable housing, high-quality education, and expanding | ||||||
3 | access to social services; and

4 | WHEREAS, Leader Ramirez ran for state representative of | ||||||
5 | the 4th House District in 2018, becoming the first Guatemalan | ||||||
6 | American elected to the Illinois General Assembly; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, During her time as a state representative, Leader | ||||||
8 | Ramirez's strong commitment to lifting working families and | ||||||
9 | immigrant communities was clear as she developed a robust and | ||||||
10 | progressive agenda to help the people of Chicago and the State | ||||||
11 | of Illinois; and

12 | WHEREAS, Leader Ramirez has been a strong voice for | ||||||
13 | high-quality public education, and she was a chief cosponsor | ||||||
14 | for the law to create an elected school board in Chicago, | ||||||
15 | therefore ensuring that Chicago families have a strong voice | ||||||
16 | about the decisions made in their public schools; and

17 | WHEREAS, Leader Ramirez pushed to expand Medicaid coverage | ||||||
18 | to older Illinoisans regardless of their immigration status, | ||||||
19 | therefore reaffirming her commitment to lifting immigrant | ||||||
20 | communities and ensuring that health care is equitable and | ||||||
21 | affordable for all; and

1 | WHEREAS, Leader Ramirez has been committed to ensuring | ||||||
2 | that housing is accessible and affordable for all and was | ||||||
3 | integral in passing the emergency housing law to keep people | ||||||
4 | housed during the COVID-19 pandemic; and

5 | WHEREAS, Leader Ramirez worked tirelessly in her district | ||||||
6 | office to ensure her community had access to state and | ||||||
7 | community information and resources by hosting numerous job | ||||||
8 | fairs, food pantry collection drives, and healthcare | ||||||
9 | enrollment workshops; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Leader Ramirez ran for U.S. Congress in the | ||||||
11 | Illinois 3rd District in 2022, making history as the first | ||||||
12 | Illinois and Midwestern Latina elected to Congress; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Leader Ramirez has broken barriers for both women | ||||||
14 | and the Latino community during her time in public service; | ||||||
15 | all who had the honor to serve alongside her know that she will | ||||||
16 | continue to use her passion and unwavering commitment to fight | ||||||
17 | for the people of Illinois at the federal level; therefore, be | ||||||

22 | Delia Ramirez on her retirement as a state representative, |
