A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING JACKSON STATE UNIVERSITY HEAD WOMEN'S BASKETBALL COACH TOMEKIA REED FOR BEING NAMED THE SOUTHWESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE (SWAC) COACH OF THE YEAR FOUR TIMES (THREE CONSECUTIVE) IN HER CAREER, AND BOXTOROW HBCU NATIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR THREE TIMES.
WHEREAS, Jackson State University Head Women's Basketball Coach, Tomekia Reed, has realized unprecedented success as the women's basketball coach for the Tigers, as she has been named the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Coach of the Year four times (three consecutive) in her career, and BOXTOROW HBCU National Coach of the Year three times; and
WHEREAS, in her sixth season as head coach of the Jackson State women's basketball program, Coach Tomekia Reed has led her program to its fifth consecutive SWAC Regular Season Championship, something that has never been done in the SWAC; and
WHEREAS, as head coach of the Tigers, Coach Reed has never had a losing record, and the Tigers have recorded its third 20-win season finishing with an overall record of 26-7; and
WHEREAS, Coach Reed opened the 2023-2024 campaign by winning her 100th game at Jackson State, and this season, she has reached 108 wins against SWAC opponents and also notched a victory over a Big East opponent after defeating St. John's 60-56 in San Juan, Puerto Rico early in the season; and
WHEREAS, last season, Coach Reed and JSU defeated high-major Texas Tech, and the Tigers were ranked top 100 in NCAA national rankings, again, sitting at No. 100 at the conclusion of the season; and
WHEREAS, under the tutelage of Coach Reed, Angel Jackson has been nationally ranked in multiple categories, and Jackson is now ranked 10th in the nation in blocked shots and 13th in blocks; and
WHEREAS, Coach Reed led the Number 1 defense and Number 3 offense in the SWAC this season, and her team leads the SWAC in blocked shots, combined team defensive and offensive rebounds, and team field goal percentage; and
WHEREAS, additionally, Coach Reed has led JSU to a 51-game home win streak, and for the first time in program history, Jackson State women's basketball received a vote in the AP Top 25 poll under Reed's tenure making them a top 40 team in women's college basketball at the time of the vote; and
WHEREAS, Coach Reed will take the stage at the annual Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Convention during the Final Four to do a live drill demonstration/presentation in front of women's basketball coaches around the world, which will be the first time an HBCU coach has done a stage demonstration at the WBCA Convention; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and honor fine Mississippi educators and coaches, especially those such as Coach Tomekia Reed, a remarkable individual and excellent basketball coach who serves as an inspiration to all those who have the opportunity to learn and flourish under her tutelage, bringing glory and honor to Jackson State University, the City of Jackson and the entire State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Jackson State University Head Women's Basketball Coach Tomekia Reed for being named the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Coach of the Year four times (three consecutive) in her career, and BOXTOROW HBCU National Coach of the Year three times, and extend best wishes for continued success in all her future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Coach Tomekia Reed and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
