Corporal Ronil Singh Memorial Highway.
This measure would designate a specified portion of State Highway Route 33 in the Counties of Merced and Stanislaus as the Corporal Ronil Singh Memorial Highway. The measure would request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and the badge of the Newman Police Department and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, to erect those signs.

WHEREAS, The valorous men and women who devote themselves to law enforcement, even at the risk of imminent danger, have assumed responsibilities essential to the safety of the people and communities they serve, and when one of them dies in the line of duty, Californians honor that fallen hero by paying special tribute to the unwavering dedication that ennoble the service given and the ultimate sacrifice made; and
WHEREAS, While working in the early morning hours of December 26, 2018, Corporal Ronil Singh, 33 years of age, a much-loved husband, father, and peace officer with the Newman Police Department, was killed in the line of duty; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of Corporal Singh’s valiant law enforcement service, his abiding concern for the well-being of others, and his devotion to the City of Newman and its citizenry, he merits our profound respect and the highest commendations of the people of California; and
WHEREAS, After immigrating to the United States from the island nation of Fiji, Ronil Singh settled in the County of Stanislaus, where he studied criminal justice at Modesto Junior College in 2005 and fulfilled his dream of becoming a police officer; and
WHEREAS, Corporal Singh began serving his fellow Californians when he started his law enforcement career as a cadet with the Turlock Police Department, and through his law enforcement work as a reserve officer with the sheriff’s department in the adjacent County of Merced; and
WHEREAS, In 2011, Corporal Singh joined the Newman Police Department, a tight-knit law enforcement agency in the City of Newman, a still-rural central valley community where 13 sworn officers continually seek to prevent crime and injustice, enforce the law fairly, and defend the rights of the citizenry; and
WHEREAS, These duties spoke to Corporal Singh’s innate desire to do good in the world as a peace officer by providing committed, unstinting, and consequential service; and
WHEREAS, He was a well-respected seven-year veteran of the Newman Police Department who was frequently accompanied by his trained K-9 partner, Sam; and
WHEREAS, Corporal Singh possessed an adventurous spirit and provided an estimable role model for future generations; and
WHEREAS, Corporal Singh enjoyed the high regard of his family and the community at large, and to honor him and his heroism as a law enforcement officer, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. ordered that flags at the State Capitol in Sacramento be flown at half-staff; and
WHEREAS, Friendly, outgoing, and always willing to help family, friends, and community members alike, Corporal Ronil Singh leaves to cherish his memory and celebrate his legacy his loving wife, Anamika, his infant son, and the members of his extended family in both California and Fiji; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates the portion of State Highway Route 33 from post mile MER 29.730 in the County of Merced to post mile STA 2.060 in the County of Stanislaus as the Corporal Ronil Singh Memorial Highway; and be it further
Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested to determine the cost of erecting appropriate signs, consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway system, showing this special designation and the badge of the Newman Police Department and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, to erect those signs; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author for appropriate distribution.
