A BILL FOR AN ACT
RELATING TO THE STATE OF HAWAII MUSEUM OF NATURAL AND CULTURAL HISTORY.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. The legislature finds that the State of Hawaii museum of natural and cultural history is the world's premier resource for Hawaiian and Pacific materials, housing the world's largest collection of Hawaiian and oceanic cultural artifacts including more than twenty-two million biological specimens from Hawaii and the Pacific.
The legislature also finds that the State has supported the State of Hawaii museum of natural and cultural history's mission and operational activities through annual appropriations of general revenues, but these appropriations have decreased significantly during the preceding decade.
The legislature finds that restoring the State's allocation to the State of Hawaii museum of natural and cultural history is critical to ensure that the museum's collections are properly preserved, protected, and maintained, and that its essential cultural and historical services continue to be provided to the State.
SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $1,500,000 or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2019-2020 and the same sum or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2020-2021 to support the State of Hawaii museum of natural and cultural history, including the hiring of necessary staff; provided that any funds appropriated pursuant to this section shall be in addition to and shall not supplant any portion of the base budget of the department of budget and finance for the State of Hawaii museum of natural and cultural history.
The sums appropriated shall be expended by the department of budget and finance for the purposes of this Act.
SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2019.
