HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

Urging the County of Hawaii to adopt legislation authorizing and promoting AGRITOURISm in the county of Hawaii.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, tourism and agriculture are significant industries in Hawaii and both could benefit from a business utilizing each industry's strengths; and

 

     WHEREAS, agricultural tourism, also known as agritourism, is a type of business used by farmers and ranchers on the site of their agricultural, horticultural, or agribusiness operations for the enjoyment and education of visitors; and

 

     WHEREAS, agritourism promotes farm products, generates additional income, and provides visitors with entertainment, recreation, and education while offering the opportunity to participate in an agricultural lifestyle; and

 

     WHEREAS, agritourism has grown immensely over the last decade with billions of dollars in revenues generated nationwide every year; and

 

     WHEREAS, government should support the efforts of agricultural-zoned communities to achieve financial sustainability, including allowing short-term vacation rentals for agritourism and other innovative uses of their properties; and

 

     WHEREAS, the County of Hawaii has numerous agricultural sites, many in economically challenged areas, that have the potential to capitalize on the demand for agritourism; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2019, that the County of Hawaii is urged to authorize short-term vacation rental accommodations on agricultural lands and to adopt other legislation promoting agritourism in the County of Hawaii; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Mayor of the County of Hawaii and members of the Hawaii County Council.
