HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

H.R. NO.

132

THIRTIETH LEGISLATURE, 2019

STATE OF HAWAII

HOUSE RESOLUTION

urging the University of Hawaii to study the feasibility of establishing a Hawaii Community College distance learning center in the Puna District.

WHEREAS, due to the remote location of the Puna District, the residents of the district have never had easy access to the University of Hawaii's community college system; and

WHEREAS, the 2018 Kilauea disaster destroyed much of the infrastructure in Puna, making it even harder for residents of the district to access the University of Hawaii's community college system; and

WHEREAS, many of the residents of the Puna District would benefit from greater access to post-secondary education through a distance learning center; and

WHEREAS, increasing educational outreach to the Puna District will also increase economic development in the district; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2019, that the University of Hawaii is urged to study the feasibility of establishing a Hawaii Community College distance learning center in the Puna District; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Hawaii is requested to include in its study any budgetary needs, possible challenges, and proposed legislation necessary to establish the distance learning center; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Hawaii is requested to submit a report of its findings and recommendations, including any proposed legislation, to the Legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2020; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the University of Hawaii Board of Regents, President of the University of Hawaii, and Chancellor of Hawaii Community College.
