HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

recognizing and commemorating the one hundred twentieth anniversary of the okinawan immigration to hawaii.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, on January 8, 1900, thirty-three days after leaving Naha, Okinawa, twenty-six Okinawans arrived in Hawaii to work on a sugar plantation, marking the beginning of an indelible cultural bridge connecting the two groups of Pacific Islands; and

 

     WHEREAS, today, there are an estimated forty-five thousand people of Okinawan ancestry in Hawaii, making up approximately five percent of the State's population; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Okinawan community has been an active participant in Hawaii's development, significantly contributing to its growth from its territorial days through statehood; and

 

     WHEREAS, through the years, the Okinawan community has maintained its unique cultural identity while also sharing its distinctive culture with the rest of Hawaii, contributing to Hawaii's rich cultural diversity and multicultural traditions; and

 

     WHEREAS, this year marks the one hundred twentieth anniversary of Okinawan immigration to Hawaii; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Hawaii United Okinawa Association is celebrating this momentous occasion by organizing a number of events and activities throughout the year under the theme "Ukaji Deebiru: Celebrating 120 Years of Uchinanchu in Hawaii"; and

 

     WHEREAS, this year also marks other significant anniversaries in the Okinawan community, including the thirty-fifth anniversary of the Hawaii-Okinawa Sister-State relationship; and

 

     WHEREAS, these commemorations are designed to share the Okinawan culture with people statewide, spotlighting the talents of masters of Okinawan performing and other arts, and is expected to attract thousands of local residents and Okinawans from all parts of the world; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2020, that this body hereby recognizes and commemorates the one hundred twentieth anniversary of the Okinawan immigration to Hawaii and extends its warmest wishes and appreciation to the Okinawan community for their contributions to Hawaii; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the President of the Hawaii United Okinawa Association.
