HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

requesting the department of education to display THE TEXT OF any sign that is permanently affixed to the interior or exterior of a public school IN both THE english and hawaiian languages.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, article X, section 4, of the Hawaii State Constitution provides that "[t]he State shall promote the study of Hawaiian culture, history and language"; and

 

     WHEREAS, article XV, section 4, of the Hawaii State Constitution establishes Hawaiian as one of two official languages of the State; and

 

     WHEREAS, the newly constructed Nanakuli Public Library is the first public library in the State to include signs that are posted in both the English and Hawaiian languages; and

 

     WHEREAS, the inclusion of both the English and Hawaiian languages on signage in schools operated by the Department of Education will help to promote the Hawaiian language; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2019, that the Department of Education is requested to display in both the English and Hawaiian languages the text of any sign that is permanently affixed to the interior or exterior of a public school; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Superintendent of Education and the Board of Education.
