WHEREAS, music has always played a central role in Hawaiian culture and has been one of the most dynamic forces in maintaining and revitalizing the culture; and

WHEREAS, for over three decades, KAPENA has been widely regarded as one of Hawaii's most popular bands, and their music has greatly influenced the Hawaiian music scene by topping all local record charts; and

WHEREAS, the founding members, Kelly Boy De Lima, Timo Tatofi, and Tiva Tatofi, formed KAPENA in 1985 to enter the Brown Bags to Stardom contest representing Kaimuki High School; and

WHEREAS, the original KAPENA started a resurgence of contemporary Hawaiian music that expanded beyond the traditional Hawaiian genre, mixing Polynesian songs with pop music and danceable, reggae-infused rhythms; and

WHEREAS, in 1988, with the release of their album "Kapena and More," KAPENA claimed two Na Hoku Hanohano awards, Contemporary Hawaiian Album of the Year and Group of the Year; and

WHEREAS, beginning in the early 2000s, KAPENA changed direction by returning to their hapa haole musical roots, with Hawaiian-style songs and English lyrics; and

WHEREAS, the band's new sound, style, and vision can be heard on KAPENA's latest album, "Palena Ole," which claimed three 2018 Na Hoku Hanohano awards, Album of the Year, Group of the Year, and Music Video of the Year; and

WHEREAS, their legacy continues to live on through their expanded lineup of talented artists featuring Kelly Boy and Leolani's keiki, Kapena De Lima, Kalena De Lima, and Lilo De Lima; and

WHEREAS, even as KAPENA has evolved and changed throughout the years, they continue to be a source of inspiration for contemporary Hawaiian musicians today; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2020, that this body hereby recognizes KAPENA for their lifelong achievements and profound impact on island music, and extends its heartfelt aloha and best wishes for continued success in their career.
