HOUSE RESOLUTION
COMMENDING THE HONPA HONGWANJI MISSION OF HAWAI‘I FOR their CONTRIBUTIONS TO ADVANCING HAWAIIAN CULTURE.
WHEREAS, the HONPA HONGWANJI MISSION OF HAWAI‘I shares the living teachings of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism so that all beings may enjoy lives of harmony, peace, and gratitude; and
WHEREAS, the HONPA HONGWANJI MISSION OF HAWAI‘I was established in 1889 for the well-being of thousands of Japanese who had migrated to Hawai‘i, became a spiritual and cultural center of Japanese immigrant life, and grew into one of the most influential religious communities in Hawai‘i; and
WHEREAS, on May 19, 1901, the mission was visited by Queen Lili‘uokalani who accompanied her dear friend, Mrs. Mary Ward Foster, to the Hongwanji Hoonko service which honored Shinran Shonin, the founder of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism; the Queen's visit was a historical event with a significant impact on the Buddhist community in Hawai‘i, as the Queen that day spoke of heritage to all who call Hawai‘i home; and
WHEREAS, in 1976, the "Living Treasures of Hawai‘i" program was created by the HONPA HONGWANJI MISSION OF HAWAI‘I to share this heritage by recognizing and honoring individuals who have demonstrated excellence and extraordinary achievement in their particular field of endeavor, and who, through continuous growth, learning, and sharing, have made significant contributions toward enriching our society; and
WHEREAS, among those recognized as "Living Treasures of Hawai‘i" are ‘Iolani Luahine, Mary Kawena Pūku‘i, Lokalia Montgomery, Edith Kanaka‘ole, Gabby Pahinui, Alice Namakelua, Eddy Kamae, Abraham Akaka, Emma DeFries, Pilahi Paki, Richard Lyman, Jr., Ka‘upena Wong, Jr., Sol Bright, Ho‘oululahu Cambra-Richards, Kau‘i Zuttermeister, Rubellite Johnson, Emma Sharpe, Herb Kane, Irmgard Farden Aluli, Sally Wood Nalua‘i, Gladys Brandt, Ed Kealanahele, Agnes Cope, John Lake, Kahauanu Lake, David Kaupu, Healani Doane, Kenneth Brown, George Kanahele, Genoa Keawe, Uncle George Na‘ope, Kekuni Blaisdell, Frances Damon Holt, Moses Keale, Sr., Dwight Kauahikaua, Marie McDonald, Hoakalei Kamau‘u, David Kaohelauli‘i, Don Ho, Deborah Kakalia, Martha Hohu, Henry Auwae, Abraham Pi‘ianai‘a, Nainoa Thompson, Rocky Jensen, Myron Thompson, Mary Kekuewa, Beatrice Freitas, Edith McKenzie, Genoa Keawe, Pat Bacon, Momi Cazimero, Edward Ka‘anana, Richard Paglinawan, Dottie Thompson, Malia Craver, Mahi Beamer, Dr. Charles Burrows, Nalani Olds, Puanani Burgess, Elizabeth Jenkins, Dr. Claire Hughes, Josephine Fergerstrom, Rev. Ida Chun, Lynette Paglinawan, Haunani Apoliona, Puanani Alama Tom, Paulette Kahalepuna, Beatrice Dawson, Umi Kai, Nola Nahulu, Hailama Farden, Earl Kawa‘a, and other deserving honorees; and
WHEREAS, the HONPA HONGWANJI MISSION OF HAWAI‘I has woven the heritage and culture of Hawai‘i respectfully and seamlessly into its Buddhist teachings; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawai‘i, Regular Session of 2019, that this body hereby commends, in the malama of Kaulua and the rising of the Kūkahi, the HONPA HONGWANJI MISSION OF HAWAI‘I for supporting and advancing our Hawaiian Lāhui and offers a warm aloha from the Hawai‘i State Legislature Native Hawaiian Caucus and its best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
