HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

congratulating THE 2018 NATIONAL distinguished principal and honorees, the 2018 hawaii outstanding vice principal, and the 2019 state assistant principal of the year.

 

 


     WHEREAS, LINELL DILWITH has been a principal with the Hawaii State Department of Education for ten years, six of which were spent at Stevenson Middle School; has also served as the principal at Lanakila Elementary; and has been a member of the Leadership Institute Design and Advisory committee, a School Turnaround Specialist, and the interim complex area superintendent for the Kaimuki-McKinley-Roosevelt Complex Area; and

 

     WHEREAS, CORRINE YOGI has been teaching at Kipapa Elementary School for twenty-four years and throughout this time, she has reshaped the school by developing the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics studies program to help students enter into rewarding careers in these fields; she also encourages her students to implement new and effective studying techniques when doing classwork and has greatly improved student achievement in her classes; and

 

     WHEREAS, DEB HATADA believes in providing high quality professional development and technical assistance for teachers, helping them implement research-backed teaching practices; she also implemented the Visible Learning Program to allow students to solve real life problems, learn to innovate, and use creative designing through experiential learning; and

 

     WHEREAS, DEREK MINAKAMI excelled as a physics teacher at Kailua High School where he was named "Hawaii State Teacher of the Year" in 2001, and was the State's first public school teacher to be nationally certified; he currently serves as the principal at Kanēohe Elementary School and coordinates the Windward Oahu District Science Fair; and

     WHEREAS, NOREEN KUNITOMO, principal at Honaunau Elementary School, has helped set up the annual "Walk to School Day" event in Hawaii, encouraging the community to focus on safety improvements to slow traffic where youth walk; in addition, she also helped to imbed a bullying prevention application on smartphones for students to report bullying, which allows students, schools, and parents to prevent future bullying; and

 

     WHEREAS, ROBYN HONDA, principal at Makawao Elementary School, assisted in adding a new standard for students called "Success for All" to help students and teachers prepare for the Common Core State Standards with newly updated materials, onsite support, and ongoing professional development; she also partakes in educational campaigns such as "National Bullying Prevention Month," empowering students to stand up to bullying through campaigns and other efforts to stop the culture of bullying; and

 

     WHEREAS, SHERRY GONSALVES has worked as an elementary school administrator for twelve years in the State of Hawaii, and continues to inspire both children and adults to build upon their strengths to reach their fullest potential; she currently works as the principal at Kilauea Elementary School, where she created a new after-school program called "Adopt an After-School Club," a mentoring program offering a variety of free activities for students; and

 

WHEREAS, CECILE LAMAR, vice principal at Makaha Elementary School, was honored by the National Association of Elementary School Principals as the 2018 Hawaii Outstanding Vice Principal, as she encourages teachers to think outside-the-box and recognizes that many paths can be taken toward success; she is also a fervent believer that:  "We must be willing to think creatively and find new solutions. In that we find our synergy and momentum and really make a difference for our students"; and

 

     WHEREAS, MERYL MATSUMURA, assistant principal at Waipahu High School, has been nationally recognized by the National Association of Secondary School Principals as the 2019 State Assistant Principal of the year for her collaborative leadership and exemplary academic success of her students; now, therefore,

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2019, that this body hereby commends, congratulates, and honors LINELL DILWITH, CORRINE YOGI, DEB HATADA, DEREK MINAKAMI, NOREEN KUNITOMO, ROBYN HONDA, SHERRY GONSALVES, CECILE LAMAR, and MERYL MATSUMURA for their outstanding accomplishments and well-deserved recognition, and extends to them its sincere mahalo and best wishes for continued success in all their future endeavors.
