HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

requesting the Department of Land and Natural Resources to conduct a study for the restoration of Mauna Lahilahi and its botanical garden.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, Mauna Lahilahi is a prominent geographic feature on the leeward coast of Oahu; located south of Makaha, Mauna Lahilahi is a small mountain formation next to the ocean and is frequently visited by hikers and beachgoers; and

 

     WHEREAS, Mauna Lahilahi is of cultural significance to native Hawaiians; in the Hawaiian language, lahilahi means "thin mountain," and it is believed that this mountain was sacred to Kane, the Hawaiian god of procreation and the father of all living creatures; and

 

     WHEREAS, numerous old petroglyphs are carved into the rocks on Mauna Lahilahi by different hands and at different times and include figures of both humans and dogs; and

 

     WHEREAS, Mauna Lahilahi is home to many local plant life, found directly around the mountain structure or the nearby botanical garden; and

 

     WHEREAS, the beauty that was once Mauna Lahilahi inspired "I Mauna Lahilahi Ko Wehi," a hula believed to celebrate the arrival of Kaiulani at the Makaha Ranch in its golden days; and

 

     WHEREAS, it is important to preserve the natural beauty and plant life found on Mauna Lahilahi; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2019, that the Department of Land and Natural Resources is requested to conduct a study for the restoration of Mauna Lahilahi and its botanical garden; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Land and Natural Resources is requested to partner with the City and County of Honolulu, University of Hawaii-West Oahu, and nonprofit organizations with interest or knowledge of Mauna Lahilahi; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Land and Natural Resources is requested to submit a report of its findings and recommendations, including proposed legislation, to the Legislature no later than twenty days prior to the Regular Session of 2020; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Land and Natural Resources, the Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu, and the Chancellor of the University of Hawaii – West Oahu.
