A BILL FOR AN ACT
Making an appropriation for the renovation of the auditorium at kawananakoa middle school.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. The legislature finds that Prince David Kawananakoa middle school is located on the outskirts of downtown Honolulu. It was established in 1927 as an experimental school with curriculum for Hawaii's children. Currently, the school serves students from grades six through eight with an enrollment of approximately eight hundred students.
The legislature finds that Kawananakoa middle school was awarded the prestigious national Blue Ribbon School Award in 2007. It continues to receive numerous awards and recognitions in band, spelling bees, math competitions, poetry, art, and multimedia contests.
The legislature also finds that Kawananakoa middle school wishes to accentuate the rich culture and history of its campus by preserving, repairing, and enhancing its campus architecture. This includes a renovation of the school's auditorium. The legislature finds that the auditorium was built in 1936, and is in need of significant repairs.
The legislature further finds that Act 180, Session Laws of Hawaii 2010, appropriated $900,000 through item G-48 for the design of the renovation of the auditorium of Kawananakoa middle school, but the funds have not been released. The estimated total cost for the project is $14,000,000.
The purpose of this Act is to appropriate moneys for the capital improvement project for the renovation of the auditorium at Kawananakoa middle school.
SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $14,000,000 or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2011-2012 for the capital improvement project for the renovation of the auditorium at Kawananakoa middle school.
The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of education for the purposes of this Act.
SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2011.
