SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF LAND AND NATURAL RESOURCES TO convene A TASK FORCE TO RECOMMEND designated areas on state properties on which to erect AHU AND TO REPORT TO THE LEGISLATURE PRIOR TO THE 2015 rEGULAR SESSION.

 

 


     WHEREAS, an ahu is a stone heap or platform used by the Polynesians as a marker or memorial; and

 

     WHEREAS, ahu were once common in old Hawaii to honor and memorialize the deceased; and

 

     WHEREAS, ahu were firmly entrenched in Hawaiian culture; and

 

     WHEREAS, for example, in Kona, Hawaii, the Kona Beach Hotel is on one of the most historic sites in all of Hawaii where King Kamehameha I established his royal residence adjacent to the current site of his namesake hotel, and during his reign he rebuilt ahu'ena heiau, a temple dedicated to Lono who was the Hawaiian god of peace, agriculture, and prosperity; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2014, the House of Representatives concurring, that the Department of Land and Natural Resources is requested to convene a task force to recommend designated areas on state properties on which to erect ahu; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the task force be composed of the following members:

 

     (1)  Chairperson of the Board of Land and Natural Resources, or the Chairperson's designee;

 

     (2)  Administrator of the State Historic Preservation Division, or the Administrator's designee;

 

     (3)  Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, or the Chairperson's designee;

 

     (4)  A representative of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs, to be selected by the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs; and

 

     (5)  A representative of the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum, to be selected by the Museum; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Land and Natural Resources is requested to report to the Legislature the findings and recommendations of the task force no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2015; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the task force be dissolved on June 30, 2015; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Land and Natural Resources, Administrator of the State Historic Preservation Division, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs, and Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum.
