SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF LAND AND NATURAL RESOURCES AND THE STATE FOUNDATION ON CULTURE AND THE ARTS TO ASSIST THE FRIENDS OF LILIUOKALANI GARDENS in its preparations TO COMMEMORATE THE CENTENNIAL OF THE DEATH OF QUEEN LILIUOKALANI.

 

 


     WHEREAS, the year 2017 will mark the centennial of the death of Queen Liliuokalani; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Liliuokalani Gardens in Hilo was dedicated in 1917 and was made possible by Queen Liliuokalani along with a private party; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Liliuokalani Gardens is a magnificent example of a Japanese style tea garden landscape; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Liliuokalani Gardens stands along with other notable Japanese gardens in the United States, including Golden Gate Park in San Francisco; The Huntington in San Marino; Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park in San Diego; Osaka Garden (Wooded Isle) in Jackson Park, Chicago; and the Maymont in Richmond, Virginia; and

 

     WHEREAS, Japanese gardens are gaining in popularity, with attention being paid to peace gardens, meditation gardens, and healing gardens; and

 

     WHEREAS, the newly-formed Hilo non-profit corporation, Friends of Liliuokalani Gardens, is working with the County of Hawaii on creating a master plan for the preservation, maintenance, and improvement of the Liliuokalani Gardens with an eye toward a year-long centennial celebration in 2017, and the non-profit is working with the County of Hawaii and volunteers of interested community groups on repairs, improvements, and maintenance; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2013, the House of Representatives concurring, that the Department of Land and Natural Resources and the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts are requested to assist the Friends of Liliuokalani Gardens in its preparations to commemorate the centennial of the death of Queen Liliuokalani; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Board of Land and Natural Resources, State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, Mayor of the County of Hawaii, and the Friends of Liliuokalani Gardens.
