SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

requesting the department of transportation to designate the hilo international airport as the General albert kualii brickwood lyman international airport.

 

 


     WHEREAS, Hilo International Airport was initially constructed during the 1920s, and began operations in 1929 as "Hilo Airport"; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Hilo Airport was then renamed "General Lyman Field" by joint resolution 5 of the Territorial Legislature on April 19, 1963, to honor Brigadier General Albert Kualii Brickwood Lyman; and

 

     WHEREAS, Brigadier General Lyman was born on the island of Hawaii on May 5, 1885, and was educated at Kamehameha and Punahou schools and furthered his education at West Point Military Academy; and

 

     WHEREAS, Brigadier General Lyman was the first man of Hawaiian ancestry to be appointed a brigadier general of the United States Army and died in Hawaii in the service of his country on August 13, 1942; and

 

     WHEREAS, Act 59, Session Laws of Hawaii 1989, changed the name of the airport to its current name, "Hilo International Airport"; and

 

     WHEREAS, Act 59, Session Laws of Hawaii 1989, further named the passenger terminal "General Lyman Terminal" in memory of Brigadier General Albert Lyman; and

 

     WHEREAS, a display case was constructed for General Lyman memorabilia and plaques in July 1992; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2019, the House of Representatives concurring, that the Department of Transportation is requested to recognize the significant accomplishments of the late Brigadier General Albert Kualii Brickwood Lyman by designating the Hilo International Airport as the General Albert Kualii Brickwood Lyman International Airport; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the United States Secretary of Transportation, Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration, Governor, Director of Transportation, Mayor of the County of Hawaii, and Director of the County of Hawaii Department of Public Works.
