RESOLUTION

urging the UNIVERSITY of hawaii at manoa to extend its rainbow shuttle service into the kapahulu and waikiki communities.

     WHEREAS, the University of Hawaii at Manoa currently provides the Rainbow Shuttle service for University of Hawaii students, faculty, staff, and visitors; and

     WHEREAS, the shuttle system consists of multiple routes that travel through the campus and in the neighboring vicinity; and

     WHEREAS, the shuttle service operates during the fall and spring semesters, Monday through Friday; and

     WHEREAS, the current routes include:

     (1)  Route H1 – Student Housing/Hawaiian Express;

     (2)  Route H2 – Student Housing Express;

     (3)  Route F1- Manoa/Faculty Express;

     (4)  Route M1 – Makiki/Moiliili Express;

     (5)  Route P1 – Parking Express; and

     (6)  Route W1 – Waialae Avenue Express; and

     WHEREAS, the Makiki community service was the latest route extension and was met with great enthusiasm as it increases access to the school and provides greater convenience for students living off campus; and

     WHEREAS, homes in the Kapahulu and Waikiki areas are regularly rented by university students and frequented by students for dining, shopping, and entertainment; and

     WHEREAS, the University of Hawaii at Manoa regularly welcomes visitors and tourists to tour the campus and who, in turn, spend money on dining and other gifts from the University of Hawaii Bookstore; and

     WHEREAS, a reasonable extension of the Rainbow Shuttle down Kapahulu Avenue and into the Waikiki area will service a greater number of students and tourists, thereby adding to the quality of student life and the potential to increase awareness of the school among international and mainland visitors, while simultaneously increasing the opportunity to generate revenue with on-campus purchases; now, therefore,

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2019, the House of Representatives concurring, that this body urges the University of Hawaii at Manoa to add a Kapahulu-Waikiki extension of its Rainbow Shuttle to provide greater service and access to the school by students and visitors; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the President of the University of Hawaii System, Chair of the University of Hawaii Board of Regents, President of the Associated Students of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, President of the University of Hawaii at Manoa Graduate Student Organization, and President of the William S.
