SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

ENCOURAGING HAWAIIAN TELCOM to address the lack of fiber optic redundancy in west hawaii island.

 

 


     WHEREAS, Hawaiian Telcom provides internet, wireless, data transmission, and broader digital applications services throughout Hawaii; and

 

WHEREAS, Hawaiian Telcom is a partner in an extensive, undersea cable system that provides homes and businesses with better connectivity across the Pacific and Asia; and

 

     WHEREAS, Hawaiian Telcom only has one fiber optic cable linking Kona and Kau to Kawaihae on Hawaii island; and

 

     WHEREAS, there have been multiple cable breaks over the past years, and the resultant outages in cable and phone services have caused major disruptions to businesses and the public and have affected the public's safety; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-ninth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2018, the House of Representatives concurring, that Hawaiian Telcom is encouraged to address the lack of fiber optic redundancy in West Hawaii island; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Hawaiian Telcom is requested to examine and explore other alternatives and solutions to prevent, mitigate, or efficiently resolve future fiber optic cable breaks; and

 


     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the President and Chief Executive Officer of Hawaiian Telcom.
