STATE OF HAWAII

SENATE RESOLUTION

Requesting state employers to capitalize upon the potential of the Student Intern (Professional) I & II Program to prepare Hawaii's collegiate students for employment with the State.

WHEREAS, the Student Intern (Professional) I & II Program, which was launched in 2008, allows undergraduate junior and senior level students to gain experience in state government employment by working during breaks in the academic calendar and upon graduation; and

WHEREAS, the State seeks to facilitate workforce development and construct school-to-employment pipelines by matching candidate skill sets to employer demands; and

WHEREAS, high vacancy rates continue to trouble state employers, with agencies frequently reporting hundreds of vacant positions; and

WHEREAS, state agencies cite recruitment struggles in the face of substantial labor market obstacles, such as low unemployment and fierce salary competition from the private sector; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2019, that state employers are requested to capitalize upon the potential of the Student Intern (Professional) I & II Program to prepare Hawaii's collegiate students for employment with the State; and
