SENATE RESOLUTION

 

 

encouraging participatION in THE COMMEMORATION of the seventy-fifth anniversary of the united nations.

 

 


     WHEREAS, in 1945, nations were in ruins, World War II was over, and the world wanted peace; fifty-one countries gathered in San Francisco that year on October 24, to sign a Charter, creating a new organization, the United Nations; and

 

     WHEREAS, for seventy-five years, the United Nations has committed to help build a better world as envisioned by its founders, and serves as a beacon of light for multilateralism, international peace and security, human rights, social and economic well-being, and diplomacy; and

 

     WHEREAS, the active participation of global civil society, governments, and world leaders is an essential component for the continued inclusiveness, problem-solving, collaborative goal setting, effectiveness, and durability of the United Nations, and fulfillment of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) by 2030; and

 

     WHEREAS, in celebration of the seventy-fifth anniversary, on June 14, 2019, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a Resolution to commemorate the seventy-fifth anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations under the theme, "The future we want, the United Nations we need: reaffirming our collective commitment to multilateralism"; and

 

     WHEREAS, Hawaii enthusiastically supports the United Nations commitment to implementation of major global campaigns from the Paris Agreement and the SGDs by 2030; and

 

     WHEREAS, Hawaii was proposed as a potential host for the United Nations headquarters to serve as a diplomatic hub for all humanity; and

 

     WHEREAS, in order for Hawaii to continue to serve as a starlight for the rest of the world in setting policies on issues of sustainability and conservation, it is essential that the State demonstrate its full commitment to the goals set on the international stage by United Nations conferences and summits; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Hawaii State Legislature recognizes its important role in promoting and supporting the principles, unique mission, and indispensable work of the United Nations in order to address the most pressing issues facing humanity both globally and locally; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2020, that the Legislature encourages the citizens of Hawaii to participate in the commemoration of the seventy-fifth anniversary of the United Nations; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature appeals to members of the United States Congress, State and local public officials, civic leaders, educational institutions, the media, and the general public to support the principles and vital work of the United Nations; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature encourages robust participation and continued leadership of the Government of the United States of America as well as local state and county government in fulfillment of United Nations programs and goals to build a better and sustainable world for all peoples locally, nationally, and globally; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Majority Leader of the United States Senate; Speaker of the United States House of Representatives; Hawaii's congressional delegation; Governor of the State of Hawaii; President of the Senate; Speaker of the House of Representatives; Comptroller; Chairperson of the Board of Agriculture; Attorney General; Director of Finance; Director of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism; Director of Commerce and Consumer Affairs; Adjutant General; Chairperson of the Board of Education; Superintendent of Education; Chairperson of the Hawaiian Homes Commission; Director of Health; Director of Human Resources Development; Director of Human Services; Director of Labor and Industrial Relations; Chairperson of the Board of Land and Natural Resources; Director of Public Safety; Director of Taxation; Director of Transportation; President of the University of Hawaii System; Administrator of the State Procurement Office; Mayor of each county; and Chairperson of each county council, who in turn is requested to provide a copy to each neighborhood board chairperson in their respective county; and the Executive Secretary of the Neighborhood Commission Office of the City and County of Honolulu.
