SENATE RESOLUTION
Urging the governor to identify lands suitable for the establishment of a new national laboratory in Hawaii.
WHEREAS, national laboratories have served as the leading institution for scientific innovation in the United States for more than seventy years, spurred on by an outgrowth of immense investment in scientific research initiated by the United States during World War II; and
WHEREAS, the United States Department of Energy's seventeen national laboratories tackle the critical scientific challenges of our time, from combating climate change to discovering the origins of our universe, and possess unique instruments and facilities, many of which are not found elsewhere; and
WHEREAS, these national laboratories address large scale, complex research and development challenges with a multidisciplinary approach that places an emphasis on translating basic science to innovation; and
WHEREAS, this body finds that establishing a national laboratory in Hawaii would strengthen the State's economy by attracting and retaining professionals in the science, technology, engineering, and math sectors and assist the State in reaching its renewable energy goals, among other endeavors; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2019, that the Governor is urged to identify lands suitable for the establishment of a new national laboratory in Hawaii; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2020, the Governor is requested to submit a report to the Legislature on the lands identified; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the Governor.
