STATE OF HAWAII

SENATE RESOLUTION

 

 

REQUESTING THE OFFICE OF HAWAIIAN AFFAIRS WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF THE BERNICE PAUAHI BISHOP MUSEUM TO DEVELOP A PLAN TO IMPLEMENT REPLICAS OF HAWAIIAN HALE ON THE STATE CAPITOL LAWN SURROUNDED BY TROPICAL FOLIAGE FOR REST AREAS.

 

 

 

     WHEREAS, the State Capitol, with its unique architecture and location, draws thousands of visitors and residents each year as a place to discover the significance of the Capitol's design as it relates to Hawaiian culture and to learn about Hawaii's government as the only island-state in the nation; and

 

     WHEREAS, preserving Hawaiian culture is vital to the State's traditions and tourism industry, and replicas of Hawaiian hale showcase the lifestyle of ancient Hawaiians; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Capitol serves as a gathering place for people to visit and serve as an open and inviting public facility; and

 

     WHEREAS, in July 2004, the City and County of Honolulu adopted Ordinance 04-26, which amended the housing code to include Article 12, entitled "indigenous Hawaiian architecture"; and

 

     WHEREAS, utilizing the Capitol lawns to display Hawaiian cultural structures such as replicas of Hawaiian hale surrounded by aesthetic landscaping and foliage to provide sitting and rest areas will bring more people to the Capitol, making it a true gathering place; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-fifth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2010, that the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, with the assistance of the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum and any interested Hawaiian cultural organizations, is requested to develop a plan to implement replicas of Hawaiian hale surrounded by appropriate tropical foliage to serve as rest areas on the State Capitol lawn; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Office of Hawaiian Affairs is requested to submit the plan to this body twenty days prior to the 2011 regular session; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum, and the State Historic Preservation Officer.
