H.F. 197 Section 1. Section 279.11, Code 2019, is amended to read as 1 follows: 2 279.11 Number of schools —— attendance —— terms —— classroom 3 assignment . 4 1. The board of directors shall determine the number of 5 schools to be taught, divide the corporation into such wards or 6 other divisions for school purposes as may be proper, determine 7 the particular school which each child shall attend, and 8 designate the period each school shall be held beyond the time 9 required by law. 10 2. A school district shall require school administrators 11 to assign siblings who are enrolled in the school district 12 and who are deemed by the school district to be at the same 13 grade level academically to the same classroom if the siblings’ 14 parent or guardian submits to the school administrator, prior 15 to the start of the school semester, a written request that the 16 siblings be assigned to the same classroom. 17 EXPLANATION 18 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with 19 the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly. 20 This bill requires school districts to assign siblings 21 who are deemed by the district to be at the same grade level 22 academically to the same classroom if the siblings’ parent 23 or guardian submits to the school administrator, prior to 24 the start of the school semester, a written request that the 25 siblings be assigned to the same classroom. 26 -1- LSB 1859YH (3) 88 kh/jh 1/ 1
