H.F. 492 Section 1. Section 279.10, subsection 1, Code 2019, is 1 amended to read as follows: 2 1. The school year for each school district and accredited 3 nonpublic school shall begin on July 1 and the school calendar 4 shall begin no sooner than August 23 and no later than the 5 first Monday in December. The school calendar shall include 6 not less than one hundred eighty days or one thousand eighty 7 hours of instruction during the calendar year. The board 8 of directors of a school district and the authorities in 9 charge of an accredited nonpublic school shall determine the 10 school start date for the school calendar in accordance with 11 this subsection and shall set the number of days or hours 12 of required attendance for the school year as provided in 13 section 299.1, subsection 2 , but the board of directors of a 14 school district shall hold a public hearing on any proposed 15 school calendar prior to adopting the school calendar. The 16 number of instructional days or hours that a school district 17 or accredited nonpublic school shall be required to make up 18 in the event inclement weather causes the school district or 19 accredited nonpublic school to close during the regular school 20 calendar shall be limited to not more than five instructional 21 days or thirty instructional hours. If the board of directors 22 of a district or the authorities in charge of an accredited 23 nonpublic school extends the school calendar because inclement 24 weather caused the school district or accredited nonpublic 25 school to temporarily close during the regular school calendar, 26 the school district or accredited nonpublic school may excuse a 27 graduating senior who has met district or school requirements 28 for graduation from attendance during the extended school 29 calendar. A school corporation may begin employment of 30 personnel for in-service training and development purposes 31 before the date to begin elementary and secondary school. 32 Sec. 2. EFFECTIVE DATE.
