| 2 | WHEREAS, It is important to remember and honor the service | ||||||
| 3 | of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the defense of the | ||||||
| 4 | United States of America; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, It is long overdue that we recognize, honor, and | ||||||
| 6 | remember the sacrifices of those who served and died in the | ||||||
| 7 | Vietnam War; and
| ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, Glenard Jay Gregory was born in Shipman, Illinois | ||||||
| 9 | to J.W. and Velda Lorene (Manahan) Gregory on February 27, | ||||||
| 10 | 1949; he enlisted in the United States Army on November 28, | ||||||
| 11 | 1967; and
| ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, Glenard Jay Gregory served as a Field artillery | ||||||
| 13 | Basic with Battery A of the 1st Battalion, 27th Artillery, 23rd | ||||||
| 14 | Artillery Group, II Field Force; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, Sgt. Gregory started his tour of Vietnam on May 6, | ||||||
| 16 | 1968; he was injured on April 19, 1969 and passed away on April | ||||||
| 17 | 20, 1969, tragically dying at the age of 20, just days before | ||||||
| 18 | he was scheduled to return home; and
| ||||||
| 19 | WHEREAS, Sgt. Gregory was awarded the Vietnam Campaign | ||||||
| 20 | Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the National Defense Medal, | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | the Purple Heart Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Expert | ||||||
| 2 | Sharpshooter Medal, and the Bronze Star with "V" Decoration; | ||||||
| 3 | and
| ||||||
| 4 | WHEREAS, Sgt. Gregory is buried in the Shipman Cemetery in | ||||||
| 5 | Macoupin County; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, Sgt. Gregory is honored on Panel 26w, Line 15 of | ||||||
| 7 | the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C.; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 8 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
| 9 | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE | ||||||
| 10 | SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate Route 16 in | ||||||
| 11 | Shipman, Illinois as the "Sgt. Glenard Jay Gregory Memorial | ||||||
| 12 | Road"; and be it further
| ||||||
| 13 | RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation | ||||||
| 14 | is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with | ||||||
| 15 | State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs | ||||||
| 16 | giving notice of the name "Sgt. Glenard Jay Memorial Road"; and | ||||||
| 17 | be it further
| ||||||
| 18 | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | ||||||
| 19 | presented to the family of Sgt. Glenard Jay Gregory, the | ||||||
| 20 | Village of Shipman, and the Secretary of Transportation.
