| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Global climate change is a result of human | ||||||
3 | behavior; the effects of global climate
change can be minimized | ||||||
4 | by adopting sustainable practices, such as recycling; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, The United States makes up 4% of the global | ||||||
6 | population, yet, as a nation, we
generate more than 30% of the | ||||||
7 | planet's waste; 65% of products in the U.S. end up in a
| ||||||
8 | landfill or become incinerated; many of these products can be | ||||||
9 | reused or recycled; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, The Illinois Public Interest Research Group | ||||||
11 | Education Fund has reported that Illinois
falls behind other | ||||||
12 | states in regard to recycling; Illinois generates an estimated | ||||||
13 | 19% more waste per capita than the average state in the U.S.; | ||||||
14 | the City of Chicago
has the lowest recycling rate, at only 9% | ||||||
15 | of all waste being recycled; and

16 | WHEREAS, November 15 of each year is America Recycles Day, | ||||||
17 | which is a perfect opportunity to encourage recycling and other | ||||||
18 | green initiatives on a statewide and national level; therefore, | ||||||
19 | be it

20 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
21 | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
