HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate Naperville North High
4School senior Alayna Nguyen for her role in winning the 2020
5NASA & Texas Instruments Codes Contest; and
6 WHEREAS, The national contest asked middle and high school
7students to propose ways to automate or optimize a process or
8product for living in and working at the International Space
9Station and required students to use coding and Texas
10Instruments technology to design and build a model of their
11proposed solution; and
12 WHEREAS, Alayna Nguyen partnered with high school students
13from New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania to create the
14competition's first-ever multi-state team, which they called
15the "Germaphobes"; and
16 WHEREAS, This multi-state team created a free-flying robot
17that uses ultraviolet light for sterilizing the space station
18so astronauts could spend their time focusing on experiments;
19and
20 WHEREAS, The judges were impressed with the multi-state
21team's ability to overcome distance barriers and collaborate

1virtually to design and build their model; and
2 WHEREAS, After an initial judging round where projects were
3scrutinized by a panel of judges from NASA and Texas
4Instruments, the Germaphobes advanced to the final round, in
5which the public was invited to vote online for their favorite
6project; and
7 WHEREAS, After more than 21,000 votes were cast, the
8Germaphobes' sterilization project received the most votes;
9and
10 WHEREAS, Each of the grand champions will receive a Texas
11Instruments graphing calculator and a Texas Instruments'
12calculator-controlled robotic vehicle, the TI-Innovator Rover;
13and
14 WHEREAS, Each champion also wins a free trip to the Johnson
15Space Center in Houston, Texas for a behind-the-scenes tour and
16an opportunity to present their design to the International
17Space Station Program Office personnel; therefore, be it
18 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
19HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
20we congratulate Alayna Nguyen and her team on being named grand
21champions of the 2020 NASA & Texas Instruments Codes Contest;
