Bill Title: Authorizes the State Treasurer to issue official commemorative medallions honoring the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution. The State Treasurer shall contract for the production, marketing, distribution, and sale of the medallions.

SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The 19th Amendment to the United States
3Constitution granted American women the right to vote, a right
4known as women's suffrage, and was ratified on August 18, 1920;
5and
6 WHEREAS, In Illinois, women's suffrage movements began as
7early as the 1860s; a statute was passed in 1873 giving women
8the opportunity to run for any school office not created by the
9Illinois Constitution; women were given the right to vote for
10school officers in 1891; and
11 WHEREAS, With the continued work of women's suffrage
12organizations throughout Illinois led by prominent citizens,
13including Jane Addams and Ida B. Wells-Barnett, women in
14Illinois secured the right to vote; and
15 WHEREAS, Governor Edward Dunne signed the suffrage bill
16into law on June 26, 1913, giving women the right to vote for
17President, as well as local officers; this action made Illinois
18the first state east of the Mississippi River to give women the
19right to vote for President; and
20 WHEREAS, In May 1919, United States Representative James
21Mann of Illinois sponsored the 19th Amendment to the United

1States Constitution, the Susan B. Anthony Woman's Suffrage
2Amendment, granting women the right to vote in all elections
3nationwide; and
4 WHEREAS, On June 4, 1919, the United States Congress passed
5the Susan B. Anthony Amendment, giving women the full right to
6vote; and
7 WHEREAS, On June 10, 1919, the Illinois General Assembly
8voted to make the Land of Lincoln one of the first three states
9in the nation to ratify the 19th Amendment to the United States
10Constitution; and
11 WHEREAS, Illinois holds a significant and unique role in
12the passage and ratification of the 19th Amendment to the
13Constitution of the United States; and
14 WHEREAS, It is in the public interest to ensure that this
15occasion is properly celebrated throughout the State; and
16 WHEREAS, The Commemorative Medallions Act (15 ILCS 555)
17provides that the State Treasurer may issue medallions to
18commemorate popular contemporaneous events of statewide
19interest; therefore, be it
20 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL

1ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
2CONCURRING HEREIN, that the State Treasurer is authorized to
3issue official commemorative medallions honoring the 100th
4anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the
5United States Constitution; and be it further
6 RESOLVED, That the State Treasurer shall contract for the
7production, marketing, distribution, and sale of the
8medallions; and be it further
9 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10delivered to State Treasurer Michael Frerichs.
