1 | SENATE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution | ||||||
3 | granted American women the right to vote, a right known as | ||||||
4 | women's suffrage, and was ratified on August 18, 1920, ending | ||||||
5 | almost a century of protest; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, In Illinois, women's suffrage movements began as | ||||||
7 | early as the 1860s; in 1873, a statute was passed giving women | ||||||
8 | the opportunity to run for any school office not created by the | ||||||
9 | Illinois Constitution; women were given the right to vote for | ||||||
10 | school officers in 1891; and

11 | WHEREAS, With the continued work of several organizations, | ||||||
12 | including the Illinois Equal Suffrage Association, the | ||||||
13 | Illinois Federation of Women's Clubs, and the Chicago Political | ||||||
14 | Equality League, women in Illinois secured the right to vote; | ||||||
15 | and

16 | WHEREAS, Governor Edward Dunne signed the suffrage bill | ||||||
17 | into law on June 26, 1913, giving women the right to vote for | ||||||
18 | President, as well as local officers; this action made Illinois | ||||||
19 | the first state east of the Mississippi River to give women the | ||||||
20 | right to vote for President; and

21 | WHEREAS, On June 4, 1919, the U.S. Congress passed the |

1 | Susan B. Anthony Amendment, giving women the full right to | ||||||
2 | vote; Illinois ratified the 19th Amendment on June 10, 1919 and | ||||||
3 | was the first state to do so; therefore, be it

4 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | ||||||
5 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare June 10, | ||||||
6 | 2019 as 19th Amendment Ratification Day in the State of | ||||||
7 | Illinois to commemorate the 100th anniversary of this event.
