SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution
3granted American women the right to vote, a right known as
4women's suffrage, and was ratified on August 18, 1920, ending
5almost a century of protest; and
6 WHEREAS, In Illinois, women's suffrage movements began as
7early as the 1860s; in 1873, a statute was passed giving women
8the opportunity to run for any school office not created by the
9Illinois Constitution; women were given the right to vote for
10school officers in 1891; and
11 WHEREAS, With the continued work of several organizations,
12including the Illinois Equal Suffrage Association, the
13Illinois Federation of Women's Clubs, and the Chicago Political
14Equality League, women in Illinois secured the right to vote;
15and
16 WHEREAS, Governor Edward Dunne signed the suffrage bill
17into law on June 26, 1913, giving women the right to vote for
18President, as well as local officers; this action made Illinois
19the first state east of the Mississippi River to give women the
20right to vote for President; and
21 WHEREAS, On June 4, 1919, the U.S. Congress passed the

1Susan B. Anthony Amendment, giving women the full right to
2vote; Illinois ratified the 19th Amendment on June 10, 1919 and
3was the first state to do so; therefore, be it
4 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
5ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare June 10,
62019 as 19th Amendment Ratification Day in the State of
7Illinois to commemorate the 100th anniversary of this event.
