| 1 | SENATE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, Distracted driving occurs when motorists engage | ||||||
| 3 | in activities that divert their attention from driving safely; | ||||||
| 4 | these can include texting, talking on a cell phone, adjusting | ||||||
| 5 | the radio, and interacting with passengers; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, Safe driving and public awareness of the dangers | ||||||
| 7 | associated with distracted driving will result in fewer traffic | ||||||
| 8 | crashes, fewer injuries, and fewer fatalities; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, In 2015, distracted driving was a factor in motor | ||||||
| 10 | vehicle crashes that killed 3,459 people nationally; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, Educating and informing the public about | ||||||
| 12 | distracted driving, enhancing public awareness of the dangers | ||||||
| 13 | associated with driving while distracted, ensuring younger | ||||||
| 14 | drivers understand the consequences of driving distracted, and | ||||||
| 15 | obeying established distracted driving traffic laws will | ||||||
| 16 | reduce the number of fatalities and injuries; and
| ||||||
| 17 | WHEREAS, The Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police | ||||||
| 18 | (ILACP) and their partner the American Automobile Association | ||||||
| 19 | (AAA), supported by the Illinois State Police, the Illinois | ||||||
| 20 | Department of Transportation, the Illinois High School & | ||||||
| 21 | College Driver Education Association (IHSCDEA), local law | ||||||

| 1 | enforcement agencies, and the State's first responders, are | ||||||
| 2 | committed to educating Illinois residents on all aspects of | ||||||
| 3 | distracted driving, to enforcing applicable State laws and to | ||||||
| 4 | supporting Illinois Distracted Driving Awareness Week; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, The ILACP and the AAA continue to develop | ||||||
| 6 | partnerships designed to create and enhance a strong, | ||||||
| 7 | supportive traffic safety culture throughout Illinois; | ||||||
| 8 | therefore, be it

| 9 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | ||||||
| 10 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare the fourth | ||||||
| 11 | week of April 2019 as "Illinois Distracted Driving Awareness | ||||||
| 12 | Week" in remembrance of John M. Sligting; and be it further
| ||||||
| 13 | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | ||||||
| 14 | presented to the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, the | ||||||
| 15 | American Automobile Association, the Illinois State Police, | ||||||
| 16 | the Illinois Department of Transportation, and the Illinois | ||||||
| 17 | High School & College Driver Education Association.
