1 | SENATE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Philip T. Kalayil, who passed away on | ||||||
4 | March 13, 2017 at the age of 86; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Philip Kalayil always desired to immigrate to the | ||||||
6 | United States; he left Kerala, India in January of 1956 and | ||||||
7 | arrived in Chicago in March of 1956; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Philip Kalayil earned a graduate degree in | ||||||
9 | sociology from Loyola University and began working with | ||||||
10 | Catholic Charities; he joined the City of Chicago's Department | ||||||
11 | of Human Services and served as the Assistant Director of | ||||||
12 | Emergency Services until his retirement in 1992; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Philip Kalayil worked with the Crossroads | ||||||
14 | International Center, organizing activities for international | ||||||
15 | students; he volunteered building institutions in the India | ||||||
16 | American community; in the early 1970s, he was one of the | ||||||
17 | founders of Asian Forum, a pan-Asian organization that looked | ||||||
18 | at strengthening the Asian American coalition of Chicago, where | ||||||
19 | his work led to many of today's Asian American and South Asian | ||||||
20 | American civic organizations; he was also very instrumental in | ||||||
21 | founding the Indo-American Democratic Organization in 1981, | ||||||
22 | which is one of the oldest political organizations in Chicago; |

2 | WHEREAS, Philip Kalayil was preceded in death by his | ||||||
3 | daughter, Lisa; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Philip Kalayil is survived by his wife of 67 | ||||||
5 | years, Annamma; his children, Tom, Sales, and Ann, along with | ||||||
6 | their spouses; his son-in-law, Tom; and his grandchildren; | ||||||
7 | therefore, be it

8 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | ||||||
9 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
10 | Philip T. Kalayil, and extend our sincere condolences to his | ||||||
11 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
12 | further

13 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
14 | presented to the family of Philip Kalayil as an expression of | ||||||
15 | our deepest sympathy.
