2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of
Jack Thurston Shankland, who passed away | ||||||
4 | on July 23, 2011; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Jack Shankland was born on March 20, 1921, in | ||||||
6 | Quincy; his parents were Clinton and Elizabeth (Weigand) | ||||||
7 | Shankland; he married Mary E. Niemann on June 15, 1948, in | ||||||
8 | Quincy; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Jack Shankland graduated from Quincy College | ||||||
10 | Academy, attended Drake University and St. Ambrose College, and | ||||||
11 | received his associate's degree from Joliet Junior College; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Jack Shankland served his country with pride and | ||||||
13 | distinction in the South Pacific during World War II; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Jack Shankland was employed by the Illinois Bell | ||||||
15 | Telephone Company in Rock Island and Joliet for 37 years; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Jack Shankland enjoyed golfing, painting, | ||||||
17 | gardening, carpentry, photography, and drumming; he also | ||||||
18 | enjoyed spending hours researching in the library and traveling | ||||||
19 | the countryside with his wife at his side; and

1 | WHEREAS, Jack Shankland was preceded in death by his | ||||||
2 | parents; his mother and father-in-law, Antoinette and Ferd | ||||||
3 | Niemann, Sr.; his son, Paul; his grandson, Kyle Flavin; his | ||||||
4 | brother, Richard; and his sister-in-law, Mildred; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Jack Shankland is survived by his loving wife of | ||||||
6 | 63 years, Mary; his children, Mary (David) Lawson, Beth | ||||||
7 | (Michael) Hansen, Christine (Rod) Springer, Ann (Robert) | ||||||
8 | Hatfield, Susan (Robert) Flavin, John Shankland, Sarah (Frank) | ||||||
9 | Turk III, Thomas (Joan) Shankland, William (Tina) Shankland, | ||||||
10 | and Joseph (Elaine) Shankland; his grandchildren, Daniel | ||||||
11 | Hayes, Kevin, Eric, Andrew, and Mary Catherine Hansen, Nick, | ||||||
12 | Lauren, Patrick, Ryan, Taylor, and Nolan Springer, Marc, John, | ||||||
13 | and Kathryn (TC Jackson) Hatfield, Kelly, Kathleen, Kristen, | ||||||

23 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | ||||||
24 | his family and friends, the passing of Jack Thurston Shankland; |
