2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Bettye J. Zoumah, who passed away on May | ||||||
4 | 19, 2019; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Bettye Zoumah was born to Cozen Kelly and Sarah | ||||||
6 | Brown on May 7, 1932; she lived in Shreveport, Louisiana and | ||||||
7 | attended Brookfield School; she moved to Los Angeles and lived | ||||||
8 | there until the death of her mother; she then moved to Chicago | ||||||
9 | to live with her great-aunt, Josephine Bell; she attended | ||||||
10 | Raymond Elementary School and Wendell Phillips High School; she | ||||||
11 | committed to her faith at Progressive Baptist Church on | ||||||
12 | December 25, 1942; she married Bert Zoumah Sr.; they raised six | ||||||
13 | children; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Bettye Zoumah attended Rite of Christian | ||||||
15 | Initiation of Adults (RCIA) in the 1950s and volunteered at | ||||||
16 | Holy Angels Catholic Church until she moved to the Roseland | ||||||
17 | community; she then attended St. John DeLaSalle Church before | ||||||
18 | returning to Holy Angels Catholic Church in 2001; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Betty Zoumah was preceded in death by her mother, | ||||||
20 | her great-aunt, and five of her children; and
| ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, Bettye Zoumah is survived by her daughter, |

1 | Pnretious (Tommy) Harris; her grandchildren; her | ||||||
2 | great-grandchildren; her great-great-grandchildren; her | ||||||
3 | nieces, nephews, and cousins; and her closest friend of 75 | ||||||
4 | years, Hazel; therefore, be it

5 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | ||||||
6 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
7 | Bettye J. Zoumah and extend our sincere condolences to her | ||||||
8 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it | ||||||
9 | further
| ||||||
10 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
11 | presented to the family of Bettye Zoumah as an expression of | ||||||
12 | our deepest sympathy.
