2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Alma Bernadine Taylor Jones of | ||||||
4 | Woodbridge, Virginia, who passed away on April 27, 2020; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Alma Jones was born to John Henry and Pearl | ||||||
6 | Matthews Taylor in Crenshaw, Mississippi on September 12, 1924; | ||||||
7 | she earned her bachelor's and master's degrees from Fisk | ||||||
8 | University in Nashville, Tennessee; she also completed | ||||||
9 | considerable postgraduate studies; Alma married Perkins S. | ||||||
10 | Jones Sr. of Rose Hill, Mississippi, and they had two children | ||||||
11 | together; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Alma Jones enjoyed teaching and was an educator | ||||||
13 | for more than 40 years; she taught in the public schools of | ||||||
14 | Cumberland, Maryland and as a demonstration teacher in the | ||||||
15 | laboratory schools of the Tuskegee Institute and at Alcorn A&M | ||||||
16 | College; she spent more than 20 years as a teacher and reading | ||||||
17 | specialist at Washington Middle School in Springfield; Alma | ||||||
18 | also served two terms as a commissioner of the Education | ||||||
19 | Council; and

20 | WHEREAS, After retirement, Alma Jones enjoyed helping | ||||||
21 | others; she volunteered as a literacy tutor at Lawrence | ||||||
22 | Education Center, a St. Johns Hospital Interfaith Caregiver, an |

1 | A.A.R.P. Lobbyist; an S.I.U. School of Medicine Geriatric | ||||||
2 | Mentor and a Literacy Tutor in Woodbridge, Virginia and for | ||||||
3 | Meals on Wheels; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Alma Jones was a member of Zion Baptist Church | ||||||
5 | prior to relocating to Woodbridge where she united with First | ||||||
6 | Mt. Zion Baptist Church; she was a life member of the | ||||||
7 | N.A.A.C.P. and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority; Alma was a | ||||||
8 | founding member of the Springfield chapters of the United Negro | ||||||
9 | College Fund and the A.K.A. Sorority; she was also a member of | ||||||
10 | the Springfield Urban League; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Alma Jones was preceded in death by her parents; | ||||||
12 | her husband; her two sisters; and her three brothers; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Alma Jones is survived by her daughter, Dr. Linda | ||||||
14 | F. Jones-Turner (C.A.); her son, Dr. Perkins S. Jones Jr. | ||||||
15 | (Sheila); her step-granddaughter, Kelisha Turner-Taylor | ||||||
16 | (William); her two great-grandchildren, Amarria and Liam; her | ||||||
17 | nieces, Marva Taylor Salaam and Cecilia Taylor; her nephews, | ||||||
18 | Byron P. Taylor (Georgia), Kermit B. Taylor (Joyce), and Kermit | ||||||
19 | J. Taylor (Bernestine); and her several great nieces, nephews, | ||||||
20 | cousins, and cherished friends; therefore, be it

21 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | ||||||
22 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
