1.1A Senate resolution
1.2recognizing National Police Week.
1.3WHEREAS, in 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated
1.4May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as National Police
1.5Week; and
1.6WHEREAS, there are over 10,500 peace officers licensed by the State of Minnesota, and,
1.7along with federal law enforcement partners, these law enforcement officers all provide selfless
1.8service, ensuring the safety and security of the residents of Minnesota; and
1.9WHEREAS, since 1874, in Minnesota, there have been 278 law enforcement officers who
1.10died in the line of duty; and
1.11WHEREAS, the Minnesota Law Enforcement Memorial Association conducted its annual
1.12Standing of the Memorial Guard from 7:00 p.m. on May 14 until 7:00 p.m. on May 15, where peace
1.13officers from all over the state traveled to the Peace officers Memorial on the Minnesota state
1.14Capitol grounds to stand silent in 20 minute shifts to keep alive the memories of those officers who
1.15died in the line of duty protecting their communities; and
1.16WHEREAS, the Minnesota Law Enforcement Memorial Association conducted its annual
1.17Candlelight Vigil on the evening of May 15, immediately following the last shift of the Standing
1.18of the Memorial Guard, where law enforcement officers, families, friends, and the public came
1.19together to pay tribute to those officers who died in the line of duty protecting the communities;
1.20and
1.21NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.22recognizes National Police Week, all Minnesota peace officers, and especially those peace officers
1.23who have died in the line of duty.
1.24BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.25enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
1.26Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to the Minnesota Law
1.27Enforcement Memorial Association.
