Senate Bill 2997

(As Sent to Governor)

AN ACT TO RESTORE THE RIGHT OF SUFFRAGE TO JAMES MAURICE MALLETT OF HINDS COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

SECTION 1.  The right of suffrage is hereby fully and completely restored to James Maurice Mallett of Hinds County, Mississippi, who was disqualified as an elector as a result of his conviction of the crime of receiving stolen property in 2001 in Hinds County, Mississippi, and who was sentenced to serve one (1) year in the custody of the Department of Corrections.  His sentence was suspended and he was placed on probation for one (1) year.  His probation was never forwarded to the Department of Corrections for supervision, and the Circuit Court of the First Judicial District of Hinds County remanded his case to the files by order dated May 9, 2001.  The period of probation would expire May 9, 2002.  Mr. Mallett was not assessed any costs of court.  Since that time he has conducted himself as a law-abiding and honorable citizen in a good and lawful manner.

SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.
