A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING NORTH MISSISSIPPI HEALTH SERVICES FOR RECEIVING THE 2012 MALCOLM BALDRIGE NATIONAL QUALITY AWARD.

     WHEREAS, in an April 2013 ceremony, North Mississippi Health Services was one of four U.S. organizations presented with the 2012 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award; and

     WHEREAS, the four 2012 Baldrige Award recipients were selected from a field of 39 applicants; and

     WHEREAS, the Malcolm Baldrige Quality Award is the nation's highest Presidential honor for performance excellence through innovation, improvement and visionary leadership; and

     WHEREAS, the award is named after the 26th Secretary of Commerce, Malcolm Baldrige, and was established by Congress in 1987 to enhance the competitiveness and performance of United States business and expanded in 1998 to include education and health care; and

     WHEREAS, since 1988, only 93 Baldrige Awards have been presented; and

     WHEREAS, North Mississippi Health Services is a nonprofit community-owned, and integrated health care delivery system serving 24 rural counties in northeast Mississippi and northwest Alabama; and

     WHEREAS, the Tupelo-based organization includes six hospitals, four nursing homes, and 34 clinics providing preventive and wellness services, hospital-based emergency and acute care services and post-acute care services; and

     WHEREAS, the flagship hospital of the organization, North Mississippi Medical Center, was honored with a Baldrige Award in 2006; and

     WHEREAS, North Mississippi Health Services has a workforce of 6,226 employees and 491 physicians serving at health care facilities located in six Mississippi communities, (Tupelo, Baldwyn, Eupora, Iuka, Pontotoc and West Point); and

     WHEREAS, weighted patient satisfaction results for the North Mississippi Health Services system have been at or above the national consulting firm, Press Ganey Associates, 90th percentile since 2008; and

     WHEREAS, scores from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey — a national, standardized, publicly reported poll of patients' perspectives of hospital care — were at or above the 90th percentile for one or more dimensions at all six North Mississippi Health Services hospitals; and

     WHEREAS, the North Mississippi Health Services employee retention rate has been at or above 90% since fiscal year 2009, exceeding the Bureau of Labor Statistics' benchmark for healthcare organizations by 10%; and

     WHEREAS, survey results show that employee engagement was above 90% from 2008 through 2012, and workers rated their job satisfaction as "best in class" in both 2010 and 2012; and

     WHEREAS, North Mississippi Health Services community and regional outreach includes obesity prevention services, school health centers that provide nurses to 22 schools in six counties, the free Nurse Link Call Center, and free fairs for preventive screenings and health care promotion, including blood pressure checks, flu shots, and childhood immunizations; and

     WHEREAS, North Mississippi Health Services President and Chief Executive Officer, John Heer, has been an outstanding leader and the driver in the Baldrige Award process; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize North Mississippi Health Services for its outstanding achievement in the attainment of this award and we express gratitude for meeting the health needs of the communities it serves:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, that we do hereby commend and congratulate North Mississippi Health Services for receiving the 2012 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and thank the leaders and employees for their work and dedication to the provision of excellent health care in the communities served, extending the best wishes of the Legislature in their bright future in providing quality health care.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this resolution be presented to North Mississippi Health Services and be made available to the Capital Press Corps.
