Senate Concurrent Resolution 507

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION MOURNING THE LOSS OF HONORABLE DUNN LAMPTON, FORMER UNITED STATES ATTORNEY AND DISTRICT ATTORNEY FOR THE 14TH CIRCUIT COURT DISTRICT, AND EXPRESSING THE SYMPATHY OF THE LEGISLATURE.

     WHEREAS, Honorable Dunnica Ott (Dunn) Lampton, former United States Attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi and District Attorney for the 14th Circuit Court District, passed away on August 17, 2011; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Lampton was born in 1950 and grew up in Osyka, Mississippi.  He received an associate's degree from Southwest Mississippi Junior College where he attended on a basketball scholarship.  Mr. Lampton then received a Bachelor's Degree in Education from the University of Mississippi and a Juris Doctor from the University of Mississippi School of Law; and

     WHEREAS, in 1976, Mr. Lampton began his legal career in Pike County, Mississippi.  He worked in private practice and served as the McComb City Prosecutor and Assistant District Attorney for the 14th Circuit Court District.  Beginning in 1981, Mr. Lampton served as the District Attorney for the 14th Circuit Court District, which consisted of Pike, Lincoln, Walthall and Copiah Counties.  He won election as District Attorney on five occasions and diligently served the people of the 14th District until 2001; and

     WHEREAS, in 2001, President George W. Bush appointed Mr. Lampton to serve as United States Attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi, which covers the southern 45 counties of the state.  He served as the United States Attorney until 2009; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Lampton also proudly served in the Mississippi National Guard from 1980 until 2004.  He ultimately served as Command Staff Judge Advocate for the Mississippi National Guard and retired with the rank of Brigadier General; and

     WHEREAS, in addition to his professional achievements, Mr. Lampton was passionate about his family and friends.  He loved to read and to spend time on his muscadine farm in Pike County.  Mr. Lampton is preceded in death by his parents, Percy Ford and Emma Mae Lampton of Osyka.  He is survived by his wife, Suzanne; his son, Will, and daughter-in-law, Meredith, of Zachary, Louisiana; and his daughter, Sidney, of Jackson.  He is also survived by two granddaughters, Sara and Margaret of Zachary, Louisiana; and

     WHEREAS, Dunn Lampton loved the military, loved people, and was a diligent, tenacious fighter in the courtroom who enriched the lives of all of his colleagues.  He will be missed by the members of The Mississippi Bar and by the citizens of the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby mourn the loss of Honorable Dunnica Ott (Dunn) Lampton, former United States Attorney and District Attorney for the 14th Mississippi Circuit Court District, and express our sympathy to his surviving family on his passing.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the surviving family of Dunn Lampton, forwarded to The Mississippi Bar and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
