Senate Concurrent Resolution 510

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING AND EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR PLANTING A TREE ON THE GROUNDS OF THE NEW CAPITOL BUILDING AS A 10TH ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATION OF THOSE WHO WERE TRAGICALLY KILLED ON SEPTEMBER 11, 2001.

WHEREAS, in order to commemorate the victims of the September 11, 2001, attack on the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and the plane crash in the fields of rural Pennsylvania, The Institute of Interfaith Dialog (IID) has organized a Memorial Service on the grounds of the New Capitol Building to plant a tree in an appropriate place to symbolize those individuals who died on the 10th Anniversary of that day.  They are joined in support of this commemoration by the Mississippi Religious Leadership Conference, the United Methodist Church, Catholic Diocese, Beth Israel Congregation and the Episcopal Diocese.  A single plaque will be placed under the tree planted which will state "This tree was planted at the State Capitol by The Institute of Interfaith Dialog in remembrance of those who died on September 11, 2001."  During the service, religious representatives from Christianity, Judaism and Islam will pray together for those who died and for world peace; and

WHEREAS, the planting of a tree is a sign of life and hope, and will honor those who perished, those who grieve their loss and in honor of those in the military from Mississippi who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and in honor of those in the military from Mississippi who continue to serve in the War on Terrorism; and

WHEREAS, the Mississippi Department of Finance and Administration has guidelines for the placement of honorary markers on the grounds of the new Capitol Building that keep the tradition of honoring important individuals associated with state government, and the Legislature is supporting this planting and ceremony as an appropriate commemoration at the State Capitol:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby authorize and express support for the planting of a tree on the grounds of the New Capitol Building as a 10th Anniversary Commemoration of those who were tragically killed on September 11, 2001, to be placed in an appropriate location to be selected by the Mississippi Department of Finance and Administration, and we urge all Mississippians to join in this ceremony of commemoration and religious unity.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be transmitted to the Governor and the Executive Director of the Department of Finance and Administration, the Mississippi Representative of The Institute of Interfaith Dialog, the Mississippi Religious Leadership Conference, the United Methodist Church, Catholic Diocese, Beth Israel Congregation, and the Episcopal Diocese, and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
