A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT to direct the board of governors to adopt a policy to award physical education credit to a student who is an active duty member of the armed forces or who was honorably discharged no more than three years prior to the date of enrollment and to further direct the board of governors to review the academic credits required for graduation at the constituent institutions to determine what credits may be awarded for education, training, and experience acquired by a student during military service.

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:

SECTION 1.  The Board of Governors shall adopt a policy to provide that a student who is an active duty member of the Armed Forces or who was honorably discharged from the armed services no more than three years prior to the date of enrollment may be awarded credit for any physical education requirements that are needed for graduation based on the physical training obtained by the student during military service. The Board of Governors shall also adopt guidelines for constituent institutions to use in awarding physical education credits and shall direct the constituent institutions to implement policies and procedures for awarding physical education credits pursuant to this section by the 2013 fall academic semester.

SECTION 2.  The Board of Governors shall review the graduation credits generally required by each constituent institution and identify other academic credits that may be awarded for education, training, and experience acquired by students in the military. By November 1, 2013, the Board of Governors shall determine what other academic credits may be awarded to students for education, training, and experience acquired in the military, establish the criteria to be considered by the constituent institutions in awarding those credits, and direct the constituent institutions to implement policies and procedures for awarding those credits by the 2014 fall academic semester.

SECTION 3.  This act is effective when it becomes law.
