A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT Establishing north carolina hot sauce day.

Whereas, Granville County is home to both Bailey Farms, the largest pepper producer and distributor on the eastern seaboard and "Spice It Up" hot sauce, the 2005 new product of the year and also the critics "Meet the Heat" award and People's Choice Award for 2008; and

Whereas, the North Carolina Hot Sauce Contest was conceived to promote tourism in historic downtown Oxford; and

Whereas, the contest is held on the second Saturday of September and attracts producers from across the State, who showcase North Carolina products, including hot sauces, microbreweries, wines, barbeque sauces, and fiery food, and

Whereas, in addition to the hot sauce contest, visitors can participate in various simultaneous events, including the annual Heritage Street Festival and the September Sensations Bazaar at the Harris Exhibit Hall; and

Whereas, the North Carolina Hot Sauce Contest provides visitors with a fun‑filled day of activities and deserves recognition as a statewide event; Now, therefore,

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:

SECTION 1.  Chapter 103 of the General Statutes is amended by adding a new section to read:

"§ 103‑12.  North Carolina Hot Sauce Day.

The second Saturday of September of each year is designated as North Carolina Hot Sauce Day."

SECTION 2.  This act is effective when it becomes law.
