     Designates second week of October as "New Jersey Heritage Week."

A Joint Resolution designating the second week of October as "New Jersey Heritage Week." 

 

Whereas, The history and heritage of New Jersey should be recognized and celebrated by all its residents; and

Whereas, New Jersey is one of the original 13 colonies, the third state to ratify the United States Constitution, and one of the wealthiest states in the country due to the talent and industriousness of its residents; and

Whereas, New Jersey was important to the Revolutionary War, with more battles fought here than in any other state, and with General George Washington's victory at Trenton in 1776 as one of the most important battles in the history of the nation; and

Whereas, New Jersey played a significant role in the Underground Railroad to help fugitive slaves reach freedom; and

Whereas, Many successful writers have called New Jersey home, including Judy Blume, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, Stephen Crane, Dorothy Parker, Norman Mailer, and James Fenimore Cooper; and

Whereas, Alice Paul, a New Jersey native, was a prominent women's rights activist and architect of some of the most important political achievements on behalf of women in the 20th century; and

Whereas, New Jersey is the birthplace of many firsts, including the first organized baseball game, the first light bulb, the first submarine, the first phonograph, and the first drive-in movie theater, and the place where the first passenger flight in American history was flown from New York to Atlantic City; and

Whereas, New Jersey is known as the Garden State with many thousands of acres of farmland, where blueberries, cranberries, and bell peppers for the country are grown and harvested; and

Whereas, New Jersey has the oldest working lighthouse at Sandy Hook, Lucy the Elephant in Margate, and the first dinosaur skeleton, Hadrosaurus Foulkii, found in North America; and

Whereas, Atlantic City is home to America's first boardwalk and Salt Water Taffy originated at the Jersey shore; and

Whereas, New Jersey is recognized for ethnic and religious diversity, and continues to be one of the most diverse states in the country, and people come from near and far to view, photograph, and experience New Jersey; and

Whereas, The people of the State of New Jersey should be proud of and should celebrate the State's history and heritage; now, therefore,

 

     Be It Resolved by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    a.  The second week of October of each year is designated as "New Jersey Heritage Week." 

     b.    The Governor is respectfully requested to issue a proclamation each year calling upon public officials and citizens of the State to observe the day with appropriate events.

 

     2.    This joint resolution shall take effect immediately.
