CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As introduced.

A Joint Resolution designating the calendar week containing March 12 of each year as "Girl Scouts Week" in New Jersey.

Whereas, Juliette Gordon Low founded the Girl Scouts and organized the first Girl Scout Troop on March 12, 1912 in her home in Savannah, Georgia with a goal of bringing girls out of isolated home environments; and

Whereas, With a small gathering of 18 ethnically and culturally diverse girls, Juliette Gordon Low broke the conventions of the early 20th century, reaching across class, cultural, and ethnic boundaries to ensure all girls, including those with disabilities, had a place to grow and develop their leadership skills; and

Whereas, At a time when women in the United States could not yet vote, Juliette Gordon Low sparked a worldwide movement inspiring girls to embrace their individuality, strength, and intellect; and

Whereas, The Girl Scouts, as an organization, continues to help girls fully develop their potential by providing girls with the foundation for sound decision-making, and by contributing to the improvement of society through developing girls' leadership skills and encouraging their cooperation with others; and

Whereas, The Girl Scouts prepares girls for the modern world of science and technology by offering programs in robotics, engineering, and science, through enriching experiences, such as field trips, community service projects, cultural exchanges, and environmental stewardships; and

Whereas, Through its membership in the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, the Girl Scouts of the USA is part of a worldwide family of millions of girls and adults in 146 countries and is the world's preeminent organization dedicated solely to girls that affords an accepting and nurturing environment to help girls build character and skills for success as adults; and

Whereas, More than 50 million women in America have been members of the Girl Scouts, and the Girl Scouts continues to empower a new generation of female leaders, therefore, it is fitting and proper for the State of New Jersey to honor more than 100 years of service by this well respected institution by designating the calendar week containing March 12 as "Girl Scouts Week" in New Jersey; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

     1.    The calendar week containing March 12 of each year is designated as "Girl Scouts Week" in the State of New Jersey.

     2.    The Governor is requested to annually issue a proclamation calling upon public officials and citizens of this State to observe the calendar week containing March 12 as "Girl Scouts Week" with appropriate activities and programs.
