CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As introduced.

An Assembly Resolution calling on the Division of Travel and Tourism to establish the "Anthony Bourdain Food Trail" in New Jersey.

Whereas, Celebrity chef, popular author, and television personality Anthony Bourdain died recently and unexpectedly at the age of 61; and

Whereas, Bourdain was born in Leonia, Bergen County, and spent his professional career in the restaurant industry, working his way up from being a dishwasher at a clam shack in Provincetown, Massachusetts, to being head chef in some of the country's best restaurants, including the Rainbow Room and Les Halles in New York City; and

Whereas, Bourdain also wrote best-selling books describing the high-pressure life of a chef in famous restaurants, including "Kitchen Confidential," and later in life traveled the world experiencing, explaining, and enjoying local cuisine and culture in the popular television programs "No Reservation" and "Parts Unknown"; and

Whereas, Although he became an international celebrity known for his wit, charm, and humanity who dined with presidents and ordinary people with equal ease, Bourdain never disparaged or forgot his roots in New Jersey; and

Whereas, Bourdain celebrated the food and culture of his native State in a 2015 episode of "Parts Unknown" where he visited 10 of his favorite eateries in different parts of the State and recalled his childhood spent on the beaches and restaurants of Long Beach Island; and

Whereas, The eateries visited in that episode included Kubel's in Barnegat Light, where Bourdain had clams and beer; Hiram's Roadstand, in Fort Lee, where Bourdain had a cheeseburger and a ripper hotdog; Knife and Fork, in Atlantic City, where Bourdain had pretzel-covered swordfish over lump crabmeat;  Dock's Oyster House, in Atlantic City, where Bourdain had oysters and stuffed lobster; Tony's Baltimore Grill, in Atlantic City; Tony and Ruth Steaks, in Camden, where Bourdain had eggs, meat, rice, and soup for breakfast; Donkey's Place, in Camden, where Bourdain had a Jersey, not Philly, cheesesteak; Lucille's Country Cooking, in Barnegat, where Bourdain haD stew, eggs, and meat; Frank's Deli, in Asbury Park, where Bourdain had a classic Jersey sandwich with layers of sliced ham, provolone, tomato, onions, shredded lettuce, roasted peppers, oil, and vinegar; and James' Salt Water Taffy, in Atlantic City, where Bourdain had salt water taffy; and

Whereas, Given Bourdain's love of his native State and his prominence as one of New Jersey's best known chefs, it is appropriate to remember and honor Bourdain by establishing a suitable tribute to him and the great foods he loved in New Jersey; and

Whereas, To this end, this House calls on the Division of Travel and Tourism in the Department of State to establish the "Anthony Bourdain Food Trail" in New Jersey that includes the 10 eateries visited in 2015 for "Parts Unknown" as a way to honor the life and achievements of Anthony Bourdain and the culinary excellence of New Jersey; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

     1.    This House calls on the Division of Travel and Tourism in the Department of State to establish the "Anthony Bourdain Food Trail" in New Jersey to honor the life and achievements of Anthony Bourdain and the culinary excellence of New Jersey.

     2.    Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Clerk of the General Assembly to the Director of the Division of Travel and Tourism.
