STATE OF NEW JERSEY

214th LEGISLATURE

INTRODUCED DECEMBER 1, 2011

SYNOPSIS

Designates October 21-27, 2012 as "Male Breast Cancer Awareness Week."

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As introduced.

An Assembly Resolution designating October 21 through October 27, 2012 as "Male Breast Cancer Awareness Week" in New Jersey.

Whereas, An estimated 2,000 men in the United States are diagnosed with breast cancer each year and an estimated 450 men each year will die from the disease; and

Whereas, The public commonly thinks of breast cancer as a disease affecting only women, a misconception that can delay diagnosis and treatment in men, often leading to death; and

Whereas, Early detection of male breast cancer is critical, as men who are diagnosed when breast cancer is in its earliest stages have an increased chance of successful treatment and, ultimately, survival; and

Whereas, Due in part to a lack of awareness that men can develop the disease, men are generally diagnosed with breast cancer at a later stage than women, which affects prognosis and treatment; and

Whereas, In order to facilitate early diagnosis and prompt treatment of male breast cancer, public education, awareness, and understanding of the disease is necessary; and

Whereas, In remembrance of the men who have lost their lives to breast cancer, and in support of those who are currently fighting this often overlooked disease, it is appropriate to designate October 21 through October 27, 2012 as "Male Breast Cancer Awareness Week"; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

     1.    The week of October 21 through October 27, 2012 is designated as "Male Breast Cancer Awareness Week" in the State of New Jersey in order to foster public awareness and understanding of male breast cancer and encourage early detection and prompt treatment.

     2.    The Governor is requested to issue a proclamation calling upon public officials and the citizens of this State to observe "Male Breast Cancer Awareness Week" with appropriate activities and programs.

STATEMENT

This resolution designates the week of October 21 through October 27, 2012 as "Male Breast Cancer Awareness Week" in order to raise public awareness and understanding of the disease.

Due in part to a lack of awareness that men can develop breast cancer, the disease is typically diagnosed at a later stage in men than in women, which affects prognosis and treatment.  Educating the public and promoting awareness of male breast cancer will help facilitate earlier detection, thereby increasing the chances of successful treatment and saving lives.
