SYNOPSIS

Urges United States Congress to work together and find common ground.

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As introduced.

An Assembly Resolution respectfully urging the United States Congress to demonstrate bipartisanship by working together to find common ground.

Whereas, There are questions of great consequence facing our nation today that will define what kind of country we are, and what sort of future we will leave for our children; and

Whereas, While the nation's problems are significant, they are not insurmountable if we work together and never lose sight of the bigger picture; and

Whereas, Members of the United States Congress must work more constructively together to solve the challenges facing our country by speaking well of each other and respecting different points of view; and

Whereas, Our elected officials in Congress, along with those at the State and local level, must engage in the politics of bipartisanship by listening to one another, seeking common ground, and embracing principled compromise; and

Whereas, By embracing the politics of bipartisanship, one may recognize that there can be different ways to reach the same goals and place our common interests ahead of any and all personal or partisan interests; and

Whereas, We must all remember that before we are Democrats, Republicans, or Independents, we are first and foremost, Americans, and that out of many we are one; and

Whereas, The result of partisanship and an all-or-nothing politics is too often partisan gridlock and a do-nothing Congress, and we owe the American people better than that; and

Whereas, The practice of politics is a worthy and noble calling and congressional members must build confidence between each other and among the American people; and

Whereas, While some congressional members currently participate in bipartisan luncheons, prayer groups, and sports teams, the American people would like to see more opportunities to create friendship bonds across party affiliation and increase cross-party understanding; and

Whereas, In New Jersey, we value political leaders working together to find common ground to tackle our State's policy challenges; and

Whereas, A bipartisan group of freshmen members from the 218th New Jersey General Assembly have come together to create a "218 Club" to form relationships across the aisle in the interest of serving their constituents; and

Whereas, A bipartisan group of congressional members, particularly freshmen members, coming together and developing similar comradery may assist in fostering a healthy and more productive political climate in Congress; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

     1.    This House respectfully urges the United States Congress to follow the example of the New Jersey General Assembly "218 Club," seek common ground, and bring forth a new era of bipartisanship by working together on behalf of the American people and the nation's common interests.

     2.    Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Clerk of the General Assembly to the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, the Minority leader of the United States House of Representatives, the Majority leader of the United States Senate, the Minority leader of the United States Senate, and each member of the United States Congress elected from the State of New Jersey.

STATEMENT

This resolution respectfully urges the United States Congress to demonstrate bipartisanship by following the example of the "218 Club" and working together to find common ground.  In a time of divided government, congressional members must be willing to listen to one another, seek common ground, and embrace principled compromise.  By embracing the politics of bipartisanship, one may recognize that there can be different ways to reach the same goals, while placing our common interests ahead of any and all personal or partisan interests.

In New Jersey, a bipartisan group of freshmen members from the 218th New Jersey General Assembly have come together to form relationships across the aisle in the interest of serving their constituents.  The General Assembly respectfully urges the United States Congress to create spaces and opportunities for congressional members, particularly freshmen members, to come together and develop similar comradery that may assist in fostering a healthy and more productive political climate in Congress.
