Urges United States Congress to take all appropriate measures to ensure United States Postal Service remain an independent agency.

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As introduced.

An Assembly Resolution urging the United States Congress to take all appropriate measures to ensure that the United States Postal Service remains an independent establishment of the United States federal government.

Whereas, The United States Congress has the authority to establish post offices and post roads under clause 7 of section 8 of article I of the Constitution of the United States; and

Whereas, The United States Postal Service is a self-sustaining, independent agency that relies on revenue derived from the sale of postal services and products, not on taxpayer funds; and

Whereas, The United States Postal Service and the more than 500,000 employees of the United States Postal Service are at the center of the $1.4 trillion mailing industry, which employs a total of 7.5 million individuals in the United States; and

Whereas, The United States Postal Service serves the needs of 157 million business and residential customers not less than six days a week, maintains an affordable and universal network, and connects the rural, suburban, and urban communities of the United States; and

Whereas, The United States Postal Service is consistently one of the highest rated agencies of the federal government in non-partisan opinion polls; and

Whereas, The United States Postal Service is the second largest employer of veterans in the United States; and

Whereas, The employees of the United States Postal Service are dedicated public servants who do more than process and deliver the mail of the people of the United States by often serving as the eyes and ears of communities and responding first in situations involving issues of health, safety, and crime in those communities; and

Whereas, The privatization of the United States Postal Service would result in higher prices and reduced services for the customers of the United States Postal Service, especially in rural communities, jeopardize the booming e-commerce sector, and cripple a major part of the critical infrastructure of the United States; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

     1.    This House respectfully urges the United States Congress to take all appropriate measures to ensure that the United States Postal Service remains an independent establishment of the United States federal government and is not subject to privatization in whole or in part.

     2.    Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Clerk of the General Assembly to the Speaker and the Minority leader of the United States House of Representatives, the Majority and Minority leader of the United States Senate, and each member of the United States Congress elected from the State of New Jersey.

STATEMENT

This resolution respectfully urges the United States Congress to take all appropriate measures to ensure that the United States Postal Service remains an independent establishment of the United States federal government and is not subject to privatization in whole or in part.

The privatization of the United States Postal Service would do the following:

·         result in higher prices and reduced services for the customers of the United States Postal Service, especially in rural communities;

·         jeopardize the booming e-commerce sector; and

·         cripple a major part of the critical infrastructure of the United States.

The United States Postal Service serves the needs of 157 million business and residential customers not less than six days a week, maintains an affordable and universal network, and connects the rural, suburban, and urban communities of the United States.  Additionally, the employees of the United States Postal Service are dedicated public servants who often serve as the eyes and ears of communities and respond first in situations involving issues of health, safety, and crime in those communities.  The United States Postal Service is also the second largest employer of veterans in the United States.

Privatization, in whole or in part, of the United States Postal Service would negatively impact federal postal employees and the people they serve.  The State of New Jersey opposes any effort to privatize the federal postal service and respectfully urges the United States Congress to prevent any attempts at such action.
