SYNOPSIS

Designates January 9 of each year as "Law Enforcement Officer Appreciation Day" in NJ.

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As introduced.

A Joint Resolution designating January 9 of each year as "Law Enforcement Officer Appreciation Day" in New Jersey.

Whereas, Law enforcement officers in this State and throughout the nation are routinely called upon to serve and protect their fellow citizens by responding to horrendous events and acting heroically to save the lives of others; and

Whereas, It is increasingly dangerous to perform these jobs in a world where law enforcement are targeted for the uniforms they wear and the duties they perform in service to their community; and

Whereas, Law enforcement officers in this State and throughout the nation serve with valor, dignity and integrity; and

Whereas, In the past decade, 1,023 law enforcement officers have died in the line of duty in the United States and their deaths are a sober reminder that our nation's law enforcement officers face danger every day they carry out their sworn duty to protect the citizens of this nation; and

Whereas, Of those 1,023 law enforcement officers that died in the line of duty in the past decade, 19 of those law enforcement officers were working in New Jersey at the time of their death; and

Whereas, Countless other law enforcement officers are injured and disabled each year while performing their duties; and

Whereas, These burdens are carried not only by law enforcement officers, but also by their families who make personal sacrifices in order for the law enforcement officers to carry out their duties; and

Whereas, In light of recent negativity directed toward law enforcement nationally, there is a need to show law enforcement officers that our citizens recognize the difficult career law enforcement officers have chosen; and

Whereas, These men and women, by their distinctive service and dedicated efforts as law enforcement officers, have earned our highest respect and deepest gratitude; and

Whereas, It is altogether fitting and proper, and within the public interest, to designate January 9 of each year as "Law Enforcement Officer Appreciation Day" in New Jersey and to encourage the citizens of this State to join in the observance of this day and appreciation for the law enforcement officers who serve and protect them; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

     1.    January 9 of each year shall be designated "Law Enforcement Officer Appreciation Day" in New Jersey.

     2.    The Governor is respectfully requested to annually issue a proclamation recognizing January 9 of each year as "Law Enforcement Officer Appreciation Day" in New Jersey and to call upon public officials and the citizens of this State to observe the day with appropriate activities and programs.

     3.    This joint resolution shall take effect immediately.

STATEMENT

This resolution designates January 9 of each year as "Law Enforcement Officer Appreciation Day" in New Jersey to encourage the citizens of this State to join in the observance of this day and appreciation for the law enforcement officers who serve and protect them.

Law enforcement officers in this State and throughout the nation are routinely called upon to serve and protect their fellow citizens by responding to horrendous events and acting heroically to save the lives of others. In the past decade, 1,023 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty in the United States, 19 of whom worked in New Jersey. Their deaths are a sober reminder that our State's law enforcement officers face danger every day they carry out their duty to protect the citizens of this State.

In light of recent negativity directed toward law enforcement nationally, there is a need to show law enforcement officers that our citizens recognize the difficult career law enforcement officers have chosen. Accordingly, it is altogether fitting and proper and within the public interest, to designate January 9 of each year as "Law Enforcement Officer Appreciation Day" in New Jersey.
