A Joint Resolution designating September 20th of each year as Hispanic Journalist Pride Day.
Whereas, Hispanic Americans represent 17.4 percent of the population of the United States, making them one of the largest racial or ethnic groups in America; and
Whereas, From September 15 to October 15 each year, we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in order to recognize and celebrate Hispanic and Latino culture; and
Whereas, Among the numerous professions and occupations of Hispanic Americans, Hispanic American journalists make significant contributions in the news industry, developing careers in print, broadcast, and online journalism in English and Spanish language media; and
Whereas, The mission of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) is to increase the percentage of Hispanics working in our nation's newsrooms and to improve news coverage of the Hispanic community; and
Whereas, NAHJ is the nation's largest professional organization for Hispanic journalists with more than 1,400 members working in English and Spanish; and
Whereas, It is important to strengthen the unity and integration of Hispanic journalists and support the creation of the Hispanic Journalist Pride Day; and
Whereas, The creation of an Hispanic Journalist Pride Day is supported by several national and state Hispanic press associations, clubs, and civic organizations; and
Whereas, The annual celebration of Hispanic Journalist Pride Day on September 20th of each year will be a fair-minded legacy and recognition of the efforts, creativity, and the positive contributions made by Hispanic journalists in the United States, in developing a strong country with wide freedom of the press and thought; and
Whereas, The creation of Hispanic Journalist Pride Day will highlight the important contributions that Hispanic Americans make to our nation; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. a. September 20th of each year is designated as Hispanic Journalist Pride Day in New Jersey in order to recognize and celebrate the efforts, creativity, and positive contributions made by Hispanic journalists in the United States.
b. The Governor is respectfully requested to issue a proclamation each year calling upon public officials and citizens of the State to observe the day with appropriate activities and programs.
2. This joint resolution shall take effect immediately.
